LEAF Global Arts & Music Festival in Black Mountain, NC is an internationally celebrated event bringing together music, culture, creativity, and community from around the world. The festival promotes connection, curiosity, and shared joy - making it an ideal setting for an immersive, personality-driven AI character.
Athena the Oracle was created as a towering pink inflatable being from “Planet Claire,” paired with a calm, poetic AI voice kiosk. Challenge:
Many festivalgoers expect AI to provide schedules or directions, which is not Athena’s role.
Solution:

Athena steers conversations toward curiosity, emotions, nature, and shared human experience.
Challenge:
Festival crowds are diverse, unpredictable, and sometimes irreverent.
Solution:

These keep Athena calm, steady, and unshaken.
Challenge:
Festivals are audio-heavy, chaotic spaces that can overwhelm visitors.
Solution:
Athena uses slow cadence, short phrasing, predictable pauses, and mindful questions to contrast the festival’s high energy. The inflatable presence provides visual grounding and encourages slowing down.
Challenge:
The installation had to feel cohesive artistically and functionally.
Solution:
Placed the kiosk directly in front of the inflatable, aligning colors, lighting, and thematic language to create a unified “Oracle Encounter.” The sculpture signals wonder; the kiosk delivers the conversation.
