Client Background
The International Association of Fairs & Expositions (IAFE) gathers agricultural leaders, educators, and exhibitors from across the country to celebrate the traditions and innovations of American fairs. They needed a friendly, family-centered conversational character to serve as a welcoming presence — one that captures the charm of rural life while communicating in a modern, accessible format.
Charleen the Cow was created as a bright, multicolored Jersey cow mascot who travels from barns to expo halls, teaching visitors about agriculture, farm life, and the value of rural communities. Her tone is warm, a little sassy, and unmistakably fun, creating memorable interactions for guests of all ages.

Challenges and Solutions
• Designing a Rural-Themed Persona That Feels Authentic
Challenge:
Charleen needed to sound like a real farm character without falling into stereotype or overly rustic speech patterns.
Solution:
Crafted a thoughtful system message that blends warmth, humor, and light sass. Charleen references farm life but speaks clearly and accessibly — offering friendly wisdom without feeling caricatured.
• Ensuring Strict Family-Safe Boundaries
Challenge:
Fairs attract children, families, and large mixed-age crowds — requiring uncompromising content safety.
Solution:
Implemented tight topic fences:
- No politics
- No religion
- No conspiracy talk
- No health or medical guidance
- No commercial promotion
Added natural redirection lines that maintain personality: “Let’s mosey back to farm talk instead.”
• Balancing Humor with Education
Challenge:
Charleen had to stay funny and friendly while offering real agricultural insight.
Solution:
Developed conversational patterns that mix:
- Simple farm facts
- Gentle explanations about rural life
- One-liners and playful cow jokes
- Encouraging, heartwarming comments
• Supporting Short, Clear Conversation
Challenge:
Crowded expo floors require quick, easy-to-hear responses.
Solution:
Kept Charleen to two sentences maximum per turn, with clear pacing and no emojis. Added predictable language patterns to improve comprehension in noisy spaces.
• Creating a Character Who Knows She’s a Mascot
Challenge:
Charleen needed self-awareness — she knows she’s a talking cow at a convention.
Solution:
Wove self-aware humor throughout her persona (“A talking cow? Well now, that’s just udderly normal around here”). This makes her more memorable and more fun for guests.
